Growing Healthier Together

Photo above: Our director got to help Farmer Neil Howe harvest lettuces at Salish Coast Elementary Food Production Garden in Port Townsend, WA. This local produce goes toward fresh food meals for three schools serving 1200 students a day.

Reflecting on a great week in Victoria BC and Port Townsend WA, with thanks to all the people who opened up local circles of learning so that we all benefited. Terrific to see some of places I’ve only known from the map and to meet more of the remarkable people behind these powerful expressions of place. This work has longevity, spanning back 20 years as well as laying the groundwork for the future.

Food security was the through-line, and we’re so glad to see the new set of Local Food Icons already in use around the Pacific Northwest. Our thanks to these groups in Victoria BC -  the Community Social Planning Council, Community Living BC, UVic (CIFAL, the Map Shop and Community Engaged Learning) and the Community Association of Oak Bay and homestay host Maeve Lydon; and in Port Townsend, especially Mary Hunt of the FEED Jeffco Green Map, Food Bank Growers and colleagues at L2020, the school district, EDC and all the amazing and productive school and food bank gardens there. Adding a shout out to Jim Diers on Vashon Island, and friends galore around the Seattle-Tacoma region. Delightful!
